Abalone

Abalone Shell has the colors of the ocean in it, blues, greens, purples and yellows. It is soft to the touch from repeated tumbles in the sand and water and has slight ripples on it like the patterns left in the sand as the waves lapse over it. The negative ions created by the salt water’s crashing waves brings healing energy with the abalone shell. African Trade Beads

The term "Trade Beads" typically applies to beads made predominately in Venice and Bohemia and other European countries from the late 1400s through to the early 1900s and traded in Africa and the Americas. Many of these beads have been attributed to being made in Germany, France and the Netherlands as well. The heyday of this "trade" period was from the mid 1800s through the early 1900s when millions of these beads were produced and traded in Africa. The Venetians dominated this market and produced the majority of the beads sold during this time. The J.F. Sick and Co, based in Germany and Holland was one of the largest bead brokers/importers during this period. Moses Lewin Levin was a bead importer/exporter who operated out of London from 1830 to 1913. You can see 4 of the Levin trade bead sample cards from 1865 in The History of Beads (Dubin) The popularity of these beads was revived in the late 1960s when they began to be exported from Africa into the United States and Europe. The term "Trade Beads" became very popular during this time period and is still used for the same bead reference today. The millefiori beads were also called "Love Beads" and used in necklaces with peace symbols during the Hippie days. As the popularity and availability of these old beads grew they started getting "named". We started hearing terms like "Russian Blues", "Dutch Donuts", "King Beads". Although some of these folklore names are totally meaningless...ie...."Lewis and Clarke" beads, they do describe a specific type of bead. And today these beads are more popular and collectable than ever. Thousands of these beads are in private collections around the world. Raku --is an ancient Japanese method of firing porcelain clay utilizing rapid changes in temperature. The beads are placed in a very hot kiln and a large air-tight container of shredded newspaper. Kazuri Beads

Kazuri Founder - Lady Susan Wood was born (1918) in a mud hut in an African village. Her parents were missionaries from England in the Ituri Forest. Lady Wood was sent back to England to be educated and married Michael Wood, a surgeon. They came to Kenya in 1947. They were dedicated to making a difference and Lady Wood started a coffee plantation on the Karen Blixen estate, famous from the award winning movie "Out of Africa" , at the foot of the Ngong Hills, about 30 minutes from the bustling Nairobi city center in Kenya. Lady Wood was a visionary, an unsung hero of her time. In 1975, Lady Susan Wood set up a fledging business making beads in a small shed in her back garden. She started by hiring two disadvantaged women, and quickly realized that there were many more women who were in need of jobs and so Kazuri Beads was created and began its long and successful journey as a help center for the needy women especially single mothers who had no other source of income. In 1988 Kazuri became a factory and expanded hugely with over 120 women and men. Here women are trained and apply their skills to produce these unique and beautiful beads and jewelry. Tuareg--The Tuareg are a nomadic people of Niger and surrounding countries. From Africa Direct....A friend of mine, Ron, who had been a Peace Corps volunteer working with the Tuareg in Niger, sent me the following note. "There is a website, The Friends of Niger, run by former Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, that keeps up with the goings-on of the people of Niger, including the Tuaregs. The Tuareg people in Mali and Niger were devastated by the droughts. It is estimated that 75% of the males committed suicide over the loss of the animals. The remnants moved into the cities and became beggars. The once proud culture is only a shadow of itself. The Tuaregs have been engaged in a brutal war with both Mali and Niger over the establishment of their own country for the last 20 years. We hear little about what goes on there, as is pretty much the case for a lot of what goes on in Africa. It is not in our national consciousness. But it is ironic that a culture based on a nomadic life wants to establish its own country. Being nomadic, means being free to wander wherever one wants. It is in conflict with the government of any country who wants to tax, regulate, and restrict the movement of its population. There are anthropologists who say that the Tuaregs have ties to the knights of the First Crusades. A very interesting people whose way of life is slowly but surely dying just as the Cowboy of the US has died. It is good to see the Tuaregs work finding its way into the rest of the world. When I used to show some of the things that I had brought back with me people were impressed but had no knowledge of these people.
