The Tuareg Cross translates into protective symbolism. Some believe that the arms of the cross will disperse all evil from the four corners of the earth for the individual thus keeping him or her out of harms way. This beautiful piece of craftsmanship was created by the Tuareg tribe from Africa, known around the globe for their skill in jewelry making, and especially silver design. Tuareg crosses were originally worn by men and were passed down from father to son when the boy reached puberty. The father would say: "My son, I give you the four corners of the world because one cannot know where one will die." Nowadays they're normally worn as neck adornments by women. This pendant is hand-made from authentic Tuareg silver, which is an alloy of silver and copper and the intricate carvings in the design are beautiful. The Tuareg are a nomadic people of Niger and surrounding countries. The Tuareg people in Mali and Niger were devastated by droughts and then flooding in late 2005 and immense losses have destroyed their way of life. The once proud culture is only a shadow of itself.
